So here I am, in the aftermath of the New Year's glitter and promises, trying to keep my head above water amidst a whirlwind of unexpected blows. Life threw me a curveball – setbacks, disappointments, and a heartbreaking tragedy that left me reeling. This isn't your typical "I'm not fine" moment; this is the raw, unfiltered truth.

I kicked off with restlessness, graduated to insomnia-fueled couch marathons, and finally, landed in a state where every inch of my body aches – the kind of ache that makes you want to hibernate and shut the world out. And what did I do? I put on a brave face, told everyone around me, and even convinced myself that I was "fine."

Let's be real. I AM NOT FINE! I'm hurting, I'm grappling with sadness, and honestly, I feel like shit. There, I said it.

As I pour my thoughts onto the screen, my stomach churns with that familiar nervous pain that comes when you're about to lay bare your soul. It's ironic – my sister and co-author, Kelly, is diving into a well-being journey this year, and here I am, feeling like I've taken a wrong turn somewhere. My well-being is hanging by a thread, with my heart shattered by the unimaginable loss of my Aunt Ila, a friend's rejection, the chaotic political landscape, and my son, Julian, stuck in a seemingly purposeless rut. It's a lot to carry.

           So, what's the game plan?

First off, I'm owning up to it – I need help, and I'm not afraid to admit it. Professional help is on the horizon, a compass to navigate the storm of emotions.

Then there's the elusive concept of rest. Now, those who know me know I'm not exactly best friends with the idea, but my body is staging a rebellion, and it's time to listen.

And last but not least, a spa session is on the cards for Monday – a therapeutic, "hurts so good" massage that promises a physical release matching the emotional weight on my shoulders.

Three commitments. That's what I can handle right now. I want to be fine, but the first step in healing is acknowledging when you're not. So here I am, embracing the chaos and taking small but meaningful steps towards reclaiming my well-being. Stay tuned for the journey – it's bound to be a bumpy, honest ride.

           Love and Peace!

           The Bitter Taste of Rejection

Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect it. Recently, I found myself facing a particularly bitter one. After investing time, effort, and enthusiasm into preparing a presentation, booking a flight, and arranging a session, I was blindsided by rejection. What stung the most was that the rejection came from someone I had known for years. Instead of working together to find a solution for a potential time conflict, my entire participation was canceled, leaving me angry and hurt.

From Lemons to Lemonade: The Conventional Wisdom

In times of adversity, we often hear the age-old adage, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." It's a call to turn challenges into opportunities, to find the positive amidst the sourness. Lemons, symbolizing difficulties, can be transformed into something positive and desirable through a can-do attitude and optimism.

A Twist to the Tale: "Eat Them!"

But why stop at making lemonade? I propose a twist to the conventional wisdom — "Eat them!" Lemons aren't just symbols of adversity; they are packed with nutritional benefits. High in vitamin C, lemons can aid in reducing heart disease, anemia, kidney stones, digestive issues, and even cancer. As I reflect on the setbacks and disappointments, I realize the profound truth behind this phrase.

           The Power of Self-Belief

Life's lemons often come in the form of challenges, setbacks, rejections, and disappointments. Instead of waiting for someone to bet on you, the real power lies in betting on yourself. It's a reminder that self-belief can be the most potent force in turning adversity into opportunity. In my recent devastating blow, I found the strength to overcome by placing my bet on the one person who knows my worth the best — myself.

           Stop Waiting, Start Doing

Waiting for external validation can be a never-ending journey. The rejection that stings today might lead to unforeseen opportunities tomorrow. By betting on yourself, you take control of your narrative, turning setbacks into stepping stones. It's a call to action, a reminder that your journey is in your hands, and you have the power to make the most out of every lemon life throws your way.

           Embracing the Journey

Life is unpredictable, and challenges are inevitable. The next time life hands you lemons, don't just make lemonade — savor them. Embrace the difficulties, learn from them, and use them as fuel to propel yourself forward. After all, the sweetest victories often arise from the most challenging battles.

So, when life gives you lemons, eat them! Nourish yourself with the lessons, embrace the challenges, and bet on yourself. The power to transform adversity into triumph lies within you.

“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” ” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Reflecting on Dr. King’s birthday, I believe we have come a long way in our fight for racial justice and equity, and we still have a long way to go. Dr. King reminded us that the journey is just that - movement. Dr. King's quote encapsulates the essence of unwavering determination. It speaks to the reality that progress may take different forms, but the key is to keep moving, regardless of the pace. In a world where challenges often seem insurmountable, these words offer a timeless reminder that every step forward matters.

The struggles faced by Dr. King and the civil rights movement resonate in today's world. As we confront issues of inequality, discrimination, and social injustice, the quote becomes a rallying cry for contemporary challenges. From the global stage to our local communities, the imperative to keep moving forward stands as a beacon of hope.

In my own life, this quote has been a source of strength during moments of difficulty. Whether facing personal setbacks or witnessing societal challenges, the idea of persisting in the face of adversity has been a guiding principle. It's a reminder that even in our individual capacities, we can contribute to positive change.

As we reflect on Dr. King's words, let us consider how to apply them to our lives. What steps can we take, no matter how small, to contribute to a more just and equal society? Whether through acts of kindness, advocacy, or education, each of us has the power to make a difference. Let's heed the call to keep moving forward, collectively working towards a brighter future.

In honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we honor not just a historical figure but a tireless advocate for justice and equality. The words he spoke decades ago remain relevant, urging us to press on to pursue a better world. As we navigate the challenges of today, let us draw inspiration from Dr. King's enduring message: if you can't fly, run; if you can't run, walk; if you can't walk, crawl—just keep moving forward.

In a world where our T-shirts often serve as canvases for our unspoken thoughts, mine boldly declares, "My Facial Expressions Speak for Myself." Today, my face is a canvas painted with frustration and anger. In this short blog, I want to delve into the emotions etched on my face, particularly addressing my anger towards the unjust scrutiny faced by women in leadership, exemplified by the recent resignation of Dr. Claudine Gay as the president of Harvard.

The news of Dr. Claudine Gay's resignation, coupled with the disturbing threats she and other Black women in leadership have received, has ignited a flame of anger within me. It's disheartening to witness the persistent belief that women, especially women of color, have not earned their positions and influence. The audacity of questioning our worthiness in leadership positions in the 21st century is a stark reminder that the fight for equality is far from over.

The recent attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts reveal a deeper fear – a fear of losing power and a reluctance to acknowledge that we are, indeed, worthy. It's a testament to the ingrained biases that still exist, hindering progress and perpetuating systemic injustices.

As my facial expressions convey my anger, they also reflect a deep-seated commitment to fight against these injustices. The frustration I feel is a call to action, a reminder that there is much work to be done in dismantling the barriers that persistently undermine the achievements and capabilities of women, especially those of marginalized backgrounds.

I am a Black woman in this work—proudly so. I cannot mask it, make it go away, or ignore who I am. And neither can you. I take these attacks personally because they are not myths or figments of our imagination. They happen! I have experienced similar attacks. You may want to call them micro-aggressions, but there is nothing micro about them. The questions being asked, “What sport did you play in college?” were like subtle arrows assuming that I was only admitted because I am good at sports. “They had to meet a quota,” they said, assuming that I was part of some lucky lottery system. Or being hired for a job or given a project with little support, funding, and resources and told to “have it done faster and better” than humanly possible. And in the end, when I am tired, did not meet a deadline, or made one minor error, the bias confirmation sets in.

I refuse to let these experiences define me, though. They serve as fuel for my determination to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes. In the face of adversity, I choose resilience, turning every unjust scrutiny into an opportunity to rise stronger. As a Black woman in this journey, I embrace my identity wholeheartedly, knowing that my presence contributes to a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world.

In the face of adversity, our expressions become a powerful language, conveying emotions that words alone may struggle to articulate. Today, my face tells a story of anger fueled by the injustices faced by women in leadership. The challenges posed by the likes of Dr. Claudine Gay's resignation only strengthen my resolve to continue the fight for justice and equity.

As I wear my emotions on my sleeve – or, in this case, my T-shirt – let it be a beacon for change, a call to collectively challenge the status quo, and work towards a world where leadership is valued irrespective of gender or race. The fight against injustice may be ongoing, but so is our determination to overcome it.

Embrace the New Year!

A Fresh Start for School Leaders

As we enter the dawn of a new year, it's the perfect time for school leaders to reflect, reset, and embark on a journey of self-improvement. The start of a new year brings a sense of renewal and a unique opportunity to become the best version of ourselves. At Leader Bubble, we are dedicated to supporting school leaders in their quest for continuous improvement and effective leadership. In this blog post, let's explore the concept of a new beginning, the importance of self-reflection, and the power of focusing on 2 to 3 priorities at a time.

           Embracing a New Beginning

The beginning of a new year is a powerful symbol of fresh starts and new opportunities. It's a time to leave behind the challenges of the past and embrace the potential of the future. School leaders must approach the new year with a positive mindset, ready to learn, grow, and adapt. Embrace the idea that each day is a chance to be a better leader than the day before. Here are a few practical tips to guide leaders in starting anew:

            Set Clear Intentions:

Define clear intentions for the new year. What are the overarching goals for personal and professional growth? Setting specific and achievable intentions provides a roadmap for success and keeps leaders focused on their vision for the future. I have posted my intentions on my computer screen so they are front and center every day. They are a constant reminder of my goals.

            Create a Positive Affirmation:

Develop a positive affirmation that encapsulates the aspirations for the year ahead. This mantra can serve as a daily reminder of the leader's commitment to growth, resilience, and the positive impact they aim to make within their school community. My mantra is, “

You are worthy! You are enough!”

Celebrate Successes, No Matter How Small:

Acknowledge and celebrate even the smallest successes. Recognizing achievements, whether big or small, fosters a positive atmosphere and reinforces the idea that progress is happening. This positivity is contagious and contributes to a healthy and motivated team. Every morning, I celebrate that I “get to” see another day and have a new start.

            Establish Rituals for Renewal:

Incorporate rituals that promote personal renewal and well-being. These could include regular moments of mindfulness, exercise routines, or activities that bring joy and relaxation. I go to work an hour early each day and use the time to review my calendar, read my emails, read articles, and post online. I also eat lunch away from my desk to truly enjoy my meal and recharge versus eating and working. Lastly, I end my day and reduce the work I take home. I commit to making my home a safe space to decompress and give time to my family. These rituals are essential for maintaining a balanced and resilient mindset throughout the year.

            Invest in Professional Development:

Prioritize professional development opportunities. Whether it's attending conferences, workshops, engaging in online courses, or reading a book, continuous learning is critical to staying abreast of industry trends and enhancing leadership skills. I commit to reading a book monthly, attending two conferences a year, and attending at least three online workshops. If my bucket is not filled, my ability to give to others will be minimal.

Remember, the journey of a new beginning is not about perfection but about progress and the commitment to continuous improvement. Embrace the excitement of a fresh start, and let each day be an opportunity to lead with purpose and impact.

           The Power of Self-Reflection

Reflecting on our leadership practices is a cornerstone of personal and professional growth. Take a moment to reflect on your achievements, challenges, and the impact you’ve had on your school community. Ask questions such as:

What worked well in the past year, and how can it be built upon?

Start the reflection process by acknowledging successes. Identify the strategies, initiatives, or practices that yielded positive outcomes. Understanding what worked well provides a foundation for building on strengths and amplifying successes in the future.

What challenges were faced, and what lessons were learned?

Challenges are inherent in leadership, but they also offer profound learning opportunities. Reflect on the challenges you have encountered, exploring the difficulties and lessons gleaned from overcoming them. This retrospective analysis can inform future decision-making and problem-solving.

In what areas can personal and professional growth be pursued?

Growth is a continuous journey, and self-reflection unveils areas for improvement. Consider where you aspire to grow personally and professionally. This might involve acquiring new skills, refining leadership styles, or exploring innovative approaches to address evolving challenges in education.

By understanding your strengths and areas for improvement, you can make informed decisions and lead with greater confidence.

Focusing on 2 to 3 Priorities

It's no secret that the education landscape is rife with competing priorities, making deciding where to direct attention is challenging. The most effective school leaders acknowledge this reality but understand that success lies in identifying and concentrating efforts on high-leverage activities. It is recommended that leaders focus on 2 to 3 priorities to see measured results. Steve Jobs once said, “

People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.

           ”

Identifying the right priorities is a skill that separates exceptional leaders from the rest. Instead of succumbing to the overwhelming nature of myriad tasks, leaders must discern which activities will significantly impact the school community. This involves leaning on a core team and employing proven protocols to identify problems.

           Guidance on prioritization:

Identify the Most Pressing Issues or Goals:

Begin by engaging with key stakeholders, including educators, parents, and community members. Utilize surveys, focus groups, and data analysis to identify the school community's most pressing issues or goals. This collaborative approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of the challenges at hand.

            Break Down Larger Objectives:

Once priorities are identified, break down larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks. This step is crucial for creating a roadmap that outlines the specific actions required to achieve overarching goals. It transforms complex challenges into actionable steps, making the path forward more achievable.

            Allocate Time and Resources Strategically:

Effective prioritization extends beyond identification and planning; it strategically allocates time and resources. School leaders must assess the demands of each priority, align them with the available resources, and create a realistic timeline for implementation. This strategic approach ensures a focused and sustainable effort.

So, take time to focus on a few things - the right things. It will be more manageable and help you see the process made so that you can build on the success.

As we gather around the Thanksgiving table, the air is filled with expressions of gratitude and the classic "thank you" exchanges. While these words hold undeniable value, there's a depth to gratitude that goes beyond the surface-level courtesy. In this blog, I will unravel the intricacies of gratitude, differentiating it from a simple thank you, and explore its profound impact on leadership and building a culture of appreciation.

A "thank you" is the social glue that holds our interactions together. It's the automatic response to a door held open or a favor bestowed upon us. Polite and expected, it often slips off our tongues without much thought. In some cases, I have even said thank you to people to remind them to be polite, or I have said thank you even though I did not mean it. My mother taught me always to say thank you as a means to “kill them with kindness.” Most of us have had that lesson and those moments. But how can we create meaningful moments where thank you is more genuine and sincere? Well, that is where I explored gratitude. My sister, Rochelle Valsaint, started a gratitude group,

, on social media two years ago. I joined it thinking I might see a few people share positive updates about their lives and that I may occasionally post a few pictures of my family or news about a new work opportunity. I was wrong! It was much more than that. People shared deep, personal experiences that equated to embracing their emotions during the good, challenging, and the ugly.

Gratitude is a deliberate and profound emotion. It involves more than a polite acknowledgment; it requires us to recognize and appreciate the positive aspects of our lives and the efforts of those around us. Gratitude is an intentional mindset that goes beyond a simple exchange of words. It helps you notice even the little moments and how they shape who and how you are. The practice of gratitude is in knowing that every moment is how we learn and grow. And yes, gratitude is a

shows that practicing gratitude contributes to our mental well-being. It can elevate our mood, reduce stress, and bring an overall sense of contentment. Specifically, engaging in gratitude is associated with alterations in the brain's reward centers, empathy-related regions, and decision-making areas. These neurological changes contribute to an enhanced sense of well-being, emphasizing that gratitude is not merely a positive sentiment but has a tangible impact on the brain's structure and function.

           Leadership and Gratitude

So, what does leadership have to do with gratitude? In the hustle and bustle of our professional lives, the connection between these two concepts might not always be apparent. We often associate leadership with strategy, decision-making, and the ability to navigate challenges. On the other hand, gratitude seems to find its place in moments of reflection, personal growth, or around the Thanksgiving table. However, peel back the layers, and you'll discover a powerful synergy between leadership and gratitude that goes beyond mere coincidence.

Leadership and gratitude are not separate entities; instead, they form a symbiotic relationship that has the potential to transform workplaces and elevate organizational culture. Expression of appreciation is not just a nicety but a fundamental aspect of effective leadership.

Expressing gratitude isn't just about words—it's a powerful influence that leaders can use to shape their organization's atmosphere. Picture it as a series of essential actions: setting the tone for appreciation, actively creating a culture of gratitude, leading by example through personal stories, and tackling challenges with resilience. Let's take a closer look at these leadership moves that not only express gratitude but also make it an integral part of the organizational culture.

Leadership Move: Introduce gratitude journals or boards for team members to share what they're thankful for or appreciate in their colleagues.

Leadership Move: Take a moment to write personalized thank-you notes for specific contributions or accomplishments.

Impact: Show genuine appreciation, letting team members know their efforts are noticed. It builds connection and maintains a positive work environment.

           Learn and Implement Gratitude:

Leadership Move: Organize workshops or seminars on the importance of gratitude, providing tools for daily work life.

Impact: Educate the team on the benefits of gratitude, empowering them to actively create a culture of appreciation in the workplace.

           Gratitude in Team-Building:

Leadership Move: Infuse gratitude into team-building activities, like a volunteer day or a gratitude-themed exercise.

Impact: Strengthen team bonds, fostering a positive and collaborative atmosphere. Emphasize the idea that working together and appreciating contributions lead to collective success.

           Express Thanks Regularly:

Leadership Move: Start gratitude challenges, prompting team members to express thanks to a different colleague each week.

Impact: Cultivate a habit of acknowledging contributions regularly, building a sense of community and strengthening relationships within the team.

As we move beyond the Thanksgiving season, let's go beyond mere thanks and embrace the power of genuine gratitude. It's not just a seasonal nicety but a force that can transform our workplaces and lives. So, let's do more than say thanks – let's live and breathe gratitude in everything we do. It's a simple yet profound shift that can ripple through our actions, shaping a more positive and appreciative world around us.

I invite you to share your thoughts on gratitude and any experiences you've had in fostering a culture of appreciation. Let's continue this conversation and inspire one another to cultivate gratitude during Thanksgiving and every day. Thank you for joining me on this exploration of gratitude and leadership.

Leadership is a Journey, Not a Destination

As I look back at my journey, it's clear that growing into a mature leader has been a series of eye-opening moments. The twists and turns of leadership have taught me valuable lessons, and one truth stands out above all: leadership is a delicate dance of the heart, the mind, and the soul.

When I was just starting out as a young leader, I thought I had it all figured out. My perspective was centered on survival—making quick decisions, tackling each moment as it came, and hoping to emerge unscathed. But what escaped me during those intense times was the bigger picture, the lasting impact of the choices I was making.

New leaders, especially those stepping into roles like principals or superintendents, often hit the ground running. The urgency is crystal clear, and it's easy to get caught up in the momentum. However, this whirlwind pace can sometimes create friction. Communities might resist change, misinterpreting your intentions as criticism aimed at dismantling their hard work. You might be thinking, "Wait, I'm here to bring about change!" And yes, that's your role. Yet, the manner in which change is approached can either unite people in support or trigger resistance.

I vividly recall my early days as a principal. I believed I was fostering unity, but unwittingly, I was sowing seeds of opposition. The irony is that we all shared the same goals, but our ability to truly listen to each other was clouded. My focus on survival overshadowed my capacity to trust and embrace different viewpoints. Admitting that I didn't have all the answers wasn't easy; I believed I needed to be the all-knowing leader in every circumstance. That turned out to be a significant misstep. When I faced situations where my expertise fell short, fear paralyzed me. I worried about being exposed, concerned that they'd see my vulnerabilities.

Writing this now, it seems almost comical. But in the moment, it felt logical. Leadership has its intimidating and isolating aspects, yet through the years, I've come to realize it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, it shouldn't be.

Effective leadership is about nurturing the hearts, minds, and souls of the school community. My role is to guide, not control—to empower others to see possibilities. It was only after seeking guidance from mentors and weathering a few missteps that I truly grasped my purpose.

So, what's the takeaway? Strive to be a leader who listens, who builds connections, who openly shares vulnerabilities, and who actively seeks guidance. This approach paves the way for a fulfilling leadership journey, where growth and success become intertwined companions.

As the dawn of a new school year approaches, the halls are filled with a renewed sense of anticipation and excitement. The echoes of laughter and the scent of fresh school supplies signal a fresh start, a new beginning. As educators, we are not just teachers; we are leaders, mentors, and champions of growth. With our hearts and minds aligned, we embark on this journey with unwavering commitment and the shared motto, "Whatever it takes!"

           Embracing the Teacher's Heart:

At the core of our educational journey lies the heart of a teacher. We dedicate ourselves to nurturing young minds, shaping futures, and instilling a passion for learning. This school year, let's remember the power we hold in our hands – the power to inspire, to guide, and to kindle the flame of curiosity. With each lesson, we have the opportunity to create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the classroom walls.

           Stepping into Leadership:

But we are more than just teachers; we are leaders. As principals and educational leaders, we stand at the helm, steering the ship of education toward success. Our leadership extends beyond the administrative tasks; it's about setting a vision, fostering collaboration, and creating an environment where both students and fellow educators thrive. Let's embrace the challenges and triumphs of leadership, knowing that our efforts shape not only the school year but the very fabric of our educational community.

Championing Growth and Resilience:

"Whatever it takes" – these words echo in our minds as we champion growth and resilience. We understand that the journey ahead may not always be smooth, but we are committed to rising above every obstacle. Just as a champion athlete pushes through barriers, we too will persevere, finding innovative solutions and fostering a spirit of perseverance within our students and colleagues. Our dedication to growth will be the catalyst for transformative change.

           Empowering Others and Ourselves:

As we empower others to reach their full potential, we must also remember to nurture our own growth. Leadership coaching and professional development are the tools that sharpen our skills, broaden our perspectives, and fuel our passion. By investing in our own growth, we set an example for continuous improvement, showing that we are dedicated to evolving alongside the ever-changing landscape of education.

           Conclusion:

As the first day of the new school year dawns upon us, let's remember the words of my good friend Jimmy Casas, “Teacher, Champion, Leader: Whatever it Takes!”. Let this motto remind us of our shared purpose, unwavering dedication, and commitment to fostering a thriving educational environment. Together, we will encourage, empower, and support one another, ensuring that every student who walks through our doors has the opportunity to excel and shine. Here's to a new school year filled with growth, learning, and limitless possibilities.

Happy New School Year!
